Louis Giraud, Vallauris Ceramics, Pair of Glazed Ceramic Paintings of the South of France 1950s
A pair of Mid Century ceramic paintings glazed on tile by Vallauris artist Louis Giraud. The works are signed and located (Vallauris) with a name plate to the frame. Presented in very fine period custom frames from a gallery in Cannes, gilt wood and hessian cloth.
A pair of very charming and beautifully presented paintings in glazes on ceramic. In the fauvist style one shows a cabanon, a small French agricultural building, surrounded by a colourful landscape and towering overhead a 'pin parasol' tree so typical of the south of France. The other shows a chapel with its bright red terracotta roof, surrounded by a colourful landscape and towering overhead a Cyprus tree so typical of the south of France. Very stylish and chic pieces that would grace any collection.
Vallauris’ ceramic heritage has flourished over the centuries, nurtured by the abundant clay deposits hidden beneath its golden valley. The town’s evolution reads like an exquisite narrative, spanning across various epochs – from the humble beginnings of crafting culinary pottery in ancient times to the efflorescence of ceramics during the 19th century. However, it was the vibrant and transformative 1950s that ushered in Vallauris’ golden age, drawing luminaries such as the legendary Pablo Picasso, who chose to make this idyllic village their artistic sanctuary.
Born in 1897, Louis Giraud was a painter and ceramist in Vallauris, south of France where he ran an art pottery. The same area where Picasso created his ceramics at the same period. He had many artistic collaborations including with Pyot Thiry, René Maurel and Alexandre Kostanda. He left behind a rich and varied body of work.
